This work by Van Dyck is altogether unique in the annals of cat studies, for it is a study, for a study of a bust of King Charles 1 of England, commissioned from Bernini in Rome. When Bernini, that notorious cat hater, questioned Van Dyck's method. Van Dyck replied "If a cat may look at a king, it may also look like a King."
