Cat Spells
It has been said a cat is more a spirit than an animal, little
distinction has been drawn as to the difference between witches,
fairies, spirits, goddess and the feline, the cat was said to
represent all of them.
The witches and wisewomen of old believed that cats could
fortell the future and predict the weather, indicate the tides of
love and fortune, commune with spirits and bless magic
endeavours.Cats are always associated with the spiritual feminine
principle, perhaps this is the truth which lies at the root of their
soul-kinship with women and their association with witches.
The whitemagic practised by the wisewomen and herbalists was
always done for the good of the community. Certain groups did use the
magical powers of the cat for blackmagic and evil purposes, but it is
the human and not the cat who decides whether the powers are used for
good and not evil.
In Britain Black cats are said to be lucky and it is the white
cat which is seen as a creature of ill omen. This belief is said to
have come from the Celtic mother-goddess, Ceridwen, spirit of the
rising moon and stars, who like her scandinavian counterpart Freya,
was attended by white cats who carried out her orders on earth.
The Romans who invaded Britain set out to destroy the power of
the forest dwelling druids, by spreading all sorts of propaganda, so
it seems likely that the British fear of white cats might have arisen
from a terror spread abroad by these means, for the druids revered
the moon and the mother goddess.
All the cat spells on this site are taken from the writings of
a genuine white witch, which the author Claire Nahmad has wrote into
a delightful book titled 'Cat Spells' the beautiful cat illustrations
are by Susan Robertson which also appear in the same book.
